BLACK ROCK AND MACAL RIVER
The morning starts with birding on the Black Rock road along the Macal River. This riparian area is great for species like the Barred Antshrike, Slate-headed Tody-Flycatcher, Dusky Antbird, Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, and Neotropic Cormorant among others. CROOKED TREE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
As we make our way toward Crooked Tree, keep your eyes peeled—Belize’s diverse birdlife is already on full display along the roadside. Our first birding stop is at the entrance causeway, a double-lane stretch flanked by the vast Northern Lagoon. This is a prime birding hotspot, where we typically spot over 25 species of shorebirds, waders, and raptors. Cahal Pech is an excellent place for birding in Belize. This is a fascinating site for birdwatching as the morning mist rises over the various temples and courtyards, which were built over several centuries spanning from 1000 BC to 800AD.

MOUNTAIN PINE RIDGE
We leave town at 6:00am to what is perhaps one of the most interesting habitats in Belize. We start at the transition zone where the broadleaf forest slowly transforms into pine forest. Not exactly what you would expect in a tropical country like Belize, but this ecotone offers the best of both worlds. We will be scanning for Rufous-capped Warblers, Grace’s Warbler, Stygian Owl and Black-headed Siskin. As we continue our way up the hills, we will be on the lookout for Rusty Sparrow, Cabanis’s Wren and Hepatic Tanager.

INLAND BLUE HOLE
Birding begins in the open habitat at the St. Herman’s Blue Hole parking lot. Here, we search for species such as the Yellow-faced Grassquit, Buff-throated Saltator, Green-backed Sparrow, Variable Seedeater, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, and other birds typical of open areas. As the day brightens, we take a leisurely walk along the lowland trail leading to St. Herman’s Cave. This trail offers opportunities to spot species like the Lesson’s Motmot, White-collared Manakin, Black-cheeked Woodpecker, Ivory-billed Woodcreeper, and Black-headed Saltator.
