This priviledged 2 day tour starts at 10am with an hour drive to the Tapir Mountain Reserve, then embarking on a 45 minute flat jungle hike through the lush subtropical forest of the reserve. After the 45 minute hike we arrrive at the base camp where we have lunch and pitch our tents. After setting up camp we start hiking on a jungle trail which leads us to an unexcavated ancient Mayan Ruin called Cahal Witznah which paints a perfect picture of what the site looked like during the Maya civilization.
We are led to a dry cave with our first introduction to caving. On our way back to camp we explore a second dry cave called handprint cave. At the end of the day we head back to camp and enjoy the evening and dine to a candle lit jungle dinner "bushman style". A bottle of fine local rum is shared sitting around a jungle campfire where ancient Maya stories are told. As the night sets, we find our way to our tents to have a good nights rest.
We awake to an early morning camp breakfast and set off on a 10 minute jungle trek to the top of a mountain to descend into a sink hole that lead us into the famous Actun Tunichil Mucknal cave. We then embark on our 3 hour exploration of the cave while viewing and learning about cave geology, mayan artifacts and about the rituals and ceremonies of these ancient underworlds. We then pack up and head back to our vehicle to return to San Ignacio at around 3:30pm. At the end of this trip, we guarantee you will feel like a real Indiana Jones!
