We make our way on the Western Highway at 8am for approximately 1 hour, and then along a dirt road for half hour to the Caves Branch site. On arrival, we gear up with inner tubes and headlights and embark on a 45 minutes hike through semi-jungle/local farmland. We then arrive at one of the many cave entrances and passages that make up the Caves Branch System. We hop into the water with our inner tubes to start a 3½ hour cave tour, floating down stream through cave passages. Inside the passages, we learn of the geology and Maya history of these limestone caves. You will float through 3 beautiful passages – the third cave forming a natural swimming pool of clear blue water where we stop to swim and have some snacks before entering. We then set off into this final cave which is also the most active cave of the three. Here you can view more cave formations and also some bat species. At the exit, we have a 20 minute river float through lush rainforest that leads us back to where we have vehicles parked. We then have a picnic lunch and head back to San Ignacio around 2pm.
