Actun Tunichil Muknal Overnight Caving Adventure
We start at 7:30am with a one hour drive before arriving at the Tapir Mountain Reserve. At the
bushline we leave our vehicle and embark on a 45 minute flat jungle hike. After arriving at the base camp we have a 30 minute lunch, followed by an introduction to the cave and the Maya culture.
We will strap on our helmets and headlights and do an invigorating short swim through crystal clear waters at the entrance of the cave. Follow the footsteps of the great Mayas as you wade through water, scramble over rocks, simultaneously viewing spectacular formations. These footsteps will lead you to the dry chamber where you will learn about Maya rituals and ceremonies, view evidence of their activities and explore the remnants they left behind.
Our headlights reveal hundreds of ancient Maya artifacts that were used in various ceremonies. The tour will culminate in seeing a full skeletal remain. From here we make our way out of the main chamber, hike through the cave passage-way and hike back to the car-park and then head back to San Ignacio at around 4:30pm.
